During the first phase you will learn to approach data as a material to design with. As you would with any other design material, you will evaluate its quality and reliability, test its limits and eventually design with it.

From Phase 1: Data as Material

In your groups you will be given a dataset to explore. You should first try to find the origins of the data (who collected it, how and why?) before exploring the data itself. Through scanning or skimming the data in spreadsheet software, such as Excel, you can initially try to determine if the data contains any obvious gaps or errors. Through scanning, but also filtering and sorting, you can also try to understand what the data might tell you and check this against your assumptions. Finally you will propose two different ideas for visualising the data and sketch them.

Summary

Within the given dataset propose two different ways you would try to visualise the data that would provide different meaning, insights or stories.

<aside> 💡 At least one, probably the first, of your proposals should be more conventional (i.e. using existing chart types 📈 📊) and the other can be more experimental.
